Interpreter Certification

Interpreter certification follows an examination by an organization to ensure that the standards and qualifications of an interpreter are satisfied. Certification involves taking a test or tests supplied by these organizations. For more information on NAD and RID certification, check out the NAD web page and the RID web page.

NAD evaluations are no longer offered but those who have taken and received NAD certification and maintain their NAD certification through RID, are still recognized. The RID written test dates are set by RID as the first Saturday in June and December. The RID performance test dates are determined by the regional testing center. Kentucky's regional testing center is the Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing (KCDHH). The KCDHH is a RID Supersite and as such, RID performance evaluations are scheduled by appointment. Applications and fees must still be sent to RID home office.

All applicants pay any required fees. There is a scholarship program available through the Kentucky Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf that may be able to help with the cost of testing, training and other related interpreter expenses. This scholarship is given in the Spring through the Norma Lewis Scholarship
